Poker is a family of card games which combines gaming, strategy, and ability. All poker variations involve betting as an intrinsic part of drama, and decide the winner of each hand according to the combinations of players’ cards, at least some of which stay hidden until the end of the hand. Poker games vary in the amount of cards dealt, the number of shared or « community » cards, the amount of cards that stay concealed, as well as the betting procedures.

In the majority of modern poker games, the initial round of betting begins with one or more of the players making some kind of a forced bet (the blind or ante). In poker, each player bets according to the position they think their hands is worth when compared with the other players. The activity then proceeds clockwise as each player in turn should either match (or « call ») the maximum preceding bet, or fold, losing the amount bet so much and all additional involvement from the hand. A player who suits with a wager may also « raise » (increase) the bet. The betting round ends when all players have called the last bet or folded. If all but one participant hangs on any round, the rest of the player collects the pot without being required to show their hands. If more than one player remains in contention following the final betting round, a showdown happens where the hands are revealed, along with the player with the winning hand takes the pot.

With the exception of initial forced bets, cash is just placed into the pot voluntarily by a player who considers the bet has positive expected value or who’s attempting to bluff other players for various strategic reasons. Therefore, while the outcome of any particular hand significantly involves chance, the long-run expectations of the players are decided by their activities chosen on the basis of probability, psychology, and game theory.

Poker has grown in popularity since the start of the 20th century, and it has gone from being primarily a recreational activity restricted to small groups of fans to a popular action, both for players and spectators, such as online, with numerous professional players and multimillion-dollar tournament prizes.
